“A Mother’s Love”
By: Marsha D. L. Kelley
His small hand in hers; his eyes looking up;
One loose tear trickles down his mother’s cheek.
And the sounding of the bell sends them all on their way.
She stands there watching ‘til they are all gone
And slowly turns for that short walk home.
Is it love, is it the love of a mother for her son?
Watching him grow and as only a mother knows;
Today is the beginning of a new life for him.
Tears of pride streaming down, for no fear had he shown;
Leaving him on his first day of school; now she feels so all alone.
She sits wondering how life went by so fast;
One day he’s so small, the next so tall.
Six foot two he proudly stands; he grew into such a fine man.
Where did the time go; the time that once was hers?
Now he is grown, and she is on her own.
Is it love, is it the love of a mother for her son?
Watching him grow and as only a mother knows;
Today is the beginning of a new life for him.
Tears of pride streaming down, for no fear had he shown
With his bride close to his side, but now she feels so all alone.
On this day, the day Liberty cried,
Thousands of innocent civilians died.
Her son is called up, and overseas he flies,
To defend America and all that she stands for.
The sad news comes from a messenger in blue;
Freedom has claimed another for her cause.
Is it love, the love of her mother for her son?
Watching him grow and as only a mother knows;
Today is the beginning of a new life for him.
Tears of pride streaming down, for no fear had he shown.
She always knew a hero he was, but now she feels so all alone.
A cold, fall morning, people standing all around;
An American flag covers the coffin beneath.
She falls to her knees unable to bear her greatest loss.
Pressing her head against the cold coffin lid as she begs of God;
Forgive a foolish mother for her love of her son;
She joins her only child, never to part from him again.
Is it love, is it the love of a mother for her son?
Watching him grow and as only a mother knows;
Today is the beginning of a new life for him.
Tears of pride streaming down, for no fear had he shown;
Her soul joins his in heaven, never again to be alone.
